I went out on Scuba Shack's dive boat "Wet Dream" to witness the sinking of the Antares, a 387 Foot Freighter that was sank as an artificial reef in 1995. I remember the smell that thing put off when you got downwind from it... Boy what a rank odor it had. It was full of rotted Soy Beans from what I remember and they were ripe!  We watched it sink and then went to the Avocet and did a dive and came back and dove on it.  It was neat because there were polls that were cut and laid down on the hull of the ship that filled with air and were visible from the surface (they were only 10 feet or so under the water).  There was even a Barracuda that managed to claim the wreck as his home after it had been down for only an hour.  It's a shame that Hurricane Opel did so much damage to the Antares because it would have been a great dive like the Avocet was before it broke up.

Anyway, here are some photos of the ship right before it went to the bottom of the ocean. A few as it was going down and two that I got from MBT's website (http://www.mbtdivers.com) showing it on the bottom.

Enjoy,
